Sculptures from Kevin Champeny’s “Something Fishy” series. These dynamic sculptures are created from hundreds of tiny hand cast urethane fish to capture the natural fluid nature of swimming schools of fish.

What appears to be a lovely flowering desert plant is actually a colorized electron microscopy image of a metal alloy. The material is being studied by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory scientists as a new electrode through which current flows for sodium-ion batteries. The lab’s work could lead to cheaper, higher-capacity batteries for storing electricity generated by intermittent sources like wind or solar generators.
